Critical factors to consider while buying a Meat Grinder

How many blades are there in the right Meat Grinder
Sturdy Construction of Electric Meat Grinders
How safe is the meat grinder you are buying

1. Powerful motor

A powerful motor lays the absolute foundation of convenient meat grinding. No matter how sturdy or compact the construction of a meat grinder is, without a powerful motor there’s not much to expect from it. As a thumb rule, you can consider all meat grinders above 400-watts (0.5 Hp) to be powerful enough to cater home grinding needs.

Alternatively, a meat grinder with a power rating of over 550-watts (0.75HP) can conveniently handle larger loads. Also, these are favourable for pet owners as most of them can conveniently grind bones. The hourly output rate of a meat grinder as well depends on its power rating.

2. Sturdy construction

The durability of a meat grinder is directly dependant on the quality of material used for casting its components. Ranging from stainless-steel to hardened plastic, there’s a wide range of materials used for manufacturing.

Durability is however only promised with a stainless-steel built. Cleaning especially becomes a lot easier. A few bleach wipes are enough to sterilize your meat grinder.

3. Safety

If inappropriately designed, a meat grinder can potentially cause mishaps upon silly handling. There are however some models that have inculcated thoughtful elements in their designs to avoid potential woes.

These include recessed control buttons in order to avoid accidental turning on. Another one is a circuit breaker as in the  STX Turboforce II”Platinum”, that shuts electricity to the grinder if there’s excessive load.

4. Extra plates and attachments

Some meat grinders come with extra grinding plates with different cut sizes. It is always great to have a variety of grind sizes to choose from at our disposal.

Also, attachments like a sausage stuffing kit can be a decisive factor many. Keep in mind your requirements beforehand so that you select the best meat grinder that comes with all necessary attachments.

  1. Hi

Choosing the best meat grinder is very difficult. But this article provides lots of information to find the best one. So it’s really great and thanks to the author.

  2. I would like to assist in your discussion if you were to ever revise or repeat your list. First, thank you. There are few meat grinder review sites that use privately purchased equipment and are hopefully impartially cunsumer friendly. Next, the rub:
I can see you have fallen prey to some clever marketing used to influence consumers into thinking bigger is better. Your choice of the sub-$100 model ‘Best Choice’ brand machine is a classic example of this misrepresentation of the device’s true potential. This misrepresentation is highly common in low cost motors of Chinese orgin. First, an immutable rule of physics and U.S. 110 votage. That rule is that it is impossible to run a motor above 1500 watts. In fact, motors REALLY run less than that due to resistance loss in the mechanism. Clever marketers offer an oranges rating for a normally apples term to describe “wattage” by shifting to a “peak wattage” description. This difference is achieved on a laboratory bench by fixing the motor shaft in a vise and applying perfect power to the immobilized motor. Because the motor can not perform any “work”, a phyics term for “when something is moved”, the resulting split second reaction that happens in the first thousands of a second is this “peak wattage” rate. Boom, you just changed a 300W motor into a 2400W motor. If you tool way down into the device specifications in the product descripion you can ofter see actual wattage rating listed at the bargain motor rating at the true wimpy rate you will be buying.
Another critical criterium is die size of the device. Without doubt, in my humble opinion, die sizes of #22, #32, and even heavier industrial grade #42 are superior because the mass of the stainless steel heat slower than the tiny-bored #5, and #8 grinder devices common in Kitchenaid attachement and most (crappy ?) Sub-$130 devices, where $130 is my own arbitrary tipping point for appropriately priced devices. Larger bored grinders simply don’t clog easily unless underpowered because they remain cooler and sinuous material simply can’t find a good bottleneck location to bog the device down.
With this in mind Ispent WAYYY too much time researching my eventual purchase, but this led to the discovery of an extraordinary diamond-in-the-rough on Amazon. What I found was a no-name, commercial grade, chinese knock off featuring an incredible #22 die size, 1100W, all stainless steel monster that is an absolute beast! The darn thing weighs 45 pounds but will outlast both me and my grandchildren. This knockoff costs a meager $235-ish depending on vendor. There are several venders hawking this basially same device. Similar features cost $450-$850 in name brand products like your LEMs and Westons, but this grinder is built to the same standards as these big boys (and, or/women, /people?), who dominate the upper-end market cost wise. The meat grinder I finally purchased works like a beast. Although it only has one speed it rips through anything, stuffs anything, and never looks back. It has a drawback where the bore is slighty difficult to remove for cleaning, but hey, for the price I find it WAYYY worth the little extra hassle. I just pack a small 10mm Wrench with the device to remove the six screws that replace what is normally a locking knob on most machines. In separate purchases on Amazon I bought both a quality kidney-shaped stuffing die with a minimalist two-pronged knife and a selection of different sized stainless steel stuffing horns. These additional itens brought the price up another $100 but eliminated the cost of a separate stuffer device for sausage which actually saves me money on a complete system with all bells and whistles covered. With this inexpensive setup my meat grinding now rivals that of any bucher shop. All this still costs about $150 less than entry level name brand machines that are still missing some of the same features.
    Bottom line:
Never believe a device advertising wattage greater than 1500W.
Without detail, never buy a grinder with plastic or nylon drive gears.
All stainless steel devices should be a minimum for food safety and durability reasons.
All devices should advertise hand washing of components.
Few, if any, sub-$100 appliances of this nature will perform the intended purpose. At this price point a better solution would be the purchase of a food processor with the spinning blade feature.
Grinding attachment add-ons for Kitchenaid-type mixers are underwhelming and will leave you frustrated. Those kind of attachments may actually cost more than a real and effective device adding an additional dose of insult to injury.
Outside the box there exists a device of such incredible value it makes the others look plain silly.
I found mine on Amazon using the search term “commercial #22 meat grinder”. Look for the device priced in the $230’s. There is a model with slightly higher wattage, but it has a smaller #12 bore (I believe). The #22 grinder of the same design I find is the REAL pearl though!
